Alishan’s Signature "Gothic" Look, Inspired by His Armenian Background

Jewelry designer Alishan tells us about his creations and the wonders of the Armenian countryside.

Some of the best jewelry designers in America are Armenians or from Armenian descent. Why are Armenians so talented at making jewelry?

Goldsmithing is one of the most developed crafts in Armenia that dates to medieval times. Even then jewelry creation had reached to high standards through the skills of Armenian master craftsmen who dealt with noble pearls and gemstones. They often were the goldsmiths for sultans and kings, and worked in European design houses.

Are there elements of your designs still inspired by your heritage/background?

Even though I always admired the simplicity of the German and Swiss designers, my inspirations and designs are more ornamental, have very ethnic characterizations and it manifests who I am. My Armenian background shows in my creations.

Can you pick a ring in your collection that is more of an homage to your heritage/background?

I believe that my signature “Gothic” look is very much influenced by my background, it depicts Armenian cross stones (Khatchkar).

Have you been to Armenia recently? Which tourism sites/activities would you recommend for our couples who are romantic and interested in unique destinations.

The entire countryside of Armenia is unspoiled marvel with ancient monasteries, thick forests, natural water springs. Museums, galleries and art centers, fine dining and music is all over in the capital city of Yerevan. Dilijan town also known as “Little Switzerland” is a major climatic, hydrotherapic resort. Couples can experience the silk road that once connected China to Europe and the rest stops (Caravansari) of antiquity. They could be pampered at a luxurious resort on the shores of lake Sevan. It is a small country with too many exotic places to see, and the real treasure is it’s vibrant people with their warm hearts and unbelievable hospitality.
