When it comes to proposing on Valentines Day, it can be really difficult to not be a cliche. Champagne, roses, and chocolates pretty much seal the deal. So how can you switch it up and make it your own?
1.) Cook her dinner.
Going out to a fancy restaurant can create even more pressure, not to mention the hassle of reservations and possibly enlisting help of servers and such for your proposal. Stay in, set up house, and cook her dinner– especially if this is something you don’t typically do. It will make the night memorable, personal, and perfect for a proposal… Even if you only whip up some Mac and cheese.
2.) Throw her off the trail.
Valentines Day screams proposal, especially if you’ve been together or had some serious talks. Don’t want her to think it’s happening? Present opportunities (champagne at dinner, romantic walk to a favorite spot, etc.) without presenting the ring. While this may seem particularly cruel on the holiday, it will guarantee an awesome reaction when you do finally drop to one knee.
3.) Go beyond chocolates.
Just because you’re proposing does not, in my opinion, get you out of getting some sort of Valentines Day trinket. This is extra important if you don’t want her to suspect a proposal is coming. Roses and chocolates are the cliche– so do something else. Find her a personalized gift on etsy or from her favorite store. Show her she’s more than just a holiday before you give her the best gift of all.
Good luck, my friend, and enjoy your day of love!
