Do’s and Don’ts to Customizing Your Engagement Ring

Looking for the perfect engagement ring but can’t find quite what you’re looking for? Customizing your engagement ring is a great idea! Sylvie Levine from the Sylvie Collection, gives us a few tips and what to do (and what to avoid) when creating the perfect ring for your love (or together with your partner!).

– DO your research! With the endless amounts of cuts, metals, settings, etc. it’s important to be aware of your partner’s style. Another thing to consider is your partner’s finger shape – knowing this will help you narrow down your selection in terms of style and diamond shape.

– DO be creative! The beauty of customization is having the ability to add personal touches and design a ring that is a pure reflection of your relationship, individuality and taste. Adding unique touches such as engraved initials or utilizing a family member’s stone are ways in which you can create an heirloom quality ring that will hold special meaning to you and your partner for the rest of your life. This is especially romantic if you’re planning on proposing on Valentine’s Day!

– DON’T be negligent in meeting with your designer. As the process in designing a custom ring is quite extensive, it’s important that you schedule several touch-point meetings and ample amounts of time for collaboration. Canceling meetings will only prolong the process!

– DO give yourself enough time.

– DON’T be intimidated! It’s only natural to feel a sense of intimidation when working with an experienced designer, but don’t let that stop you from voicing concerns and/or asking questions. After all, this is your future partner’s engagement ring!

– DO find the right jeweler! Once you have an idea of what you want, you’ll not only want to find a jeweler that you trust, but has the ability to articulate what you have in mind. A great way to find out would be to ask to see some of the designer’s previous work.

– DO collaborate! If you’re attracted to the idea of a one-of-a-kind ring design, but aren’t quite up to the design job, perhaps you could consider collaborating with your fiancée? Plan a surprise proposal on Valentine’s Day and let the ring design be one of your first projects together as an engaged couple.

– DO have a budget set in place. Knowing what you can afford ahead of time will be helpful when designing an engagement ring for your partner. Although custom designs tend to be expensive, Sylvie Collection is known to customize just about any type of design with very minimum additional charges – in most cases, there are none at all!
