A Snow and Fire Engagement Session

Kate & Andy

“Kate can read me like a book and I knew that if I was going to make it a surprise I would need some help. Her Grandpa’s flower field was the perfect location that was meaningful to us and made it easy to get her family involved.”

The Proposal

It was the first week of both of our last school years and Kate was going home for the weekend.  Since Andy had a longer drive, he told Kate he would not be able to make it because of work and school meetings.  Little did Kate no, those “meetings” consisted of driving down state, buying an engagement ring, and plotting a master plan with her father.

Every year Kate and her father plant a flower field together at her grandfather’s property.  Over the years, Andy had joined in their tradition and helped to grow the sunflower and zinnia patch.  After seeing the flowers in bloom that year, Andy knew he wanted to ask Kate to marry him there.  He used Kate’s soft spot for her father to get her to the flower patch without suspicion.  Her father told her that the flowers were all in bloom and that he would really like her to get out there to take some pictures.  So she planned to make a stop on her way home from school for the weekend.

When she arrived at her grandfather’s house, Kate’s dad told her that he would meet her back there after he “did some maintenance on a tractor.”  She hopped in the truck and drove back to the field, where she found Andy- half hidden in the flowers waiting for her!  He grabbed her hand, led her into the field, got on one knee and proposed!  Kate was in shock that he had pulled off such a huge surprise and the two of us could not stop smiling!

The Engagement Session

We were hoping to capture a winter wonderland in nature and we love the coziness and romance of a snowy winter.  We knew we would be getting married in the summertime so we really wanted to have our engagement session done in the winter to capture the beauty of Michigan’s different seasons.  We chose to use the woods at one of Kate’s grandparents’ homes as well as her parents’ yard because they were places we spend a lot of time and the scenery was great.

The Engagement Ring

“Kate had become a fan of the Sylvie Collection designs.  I took full advantage of her Pinterest boards and conversations we had had about rings.”

“When I first saw the ring I was not surprised by the style because I recognized it as one that Andy had pointed out to me in the past as one that he really liked.  From that moment I kind of had a feeling that was the ring he would propose with and I was so happy with his choice!”

“When Andy and Kate emailed me and completed my questionnaire, I knew we were a perfect match. The locations in this session were privately owned by family – something meaningful to them. We did the very things on the property that were natural to them: walks in the woods, cuddling under the trees, and a campfire under the stars. They key was to keep them in motion rather than posing. They printed their collection of photos into a beautiful photo book which I can only imagine will be seen as the greatest love story in future generations of their family.”
