There seems to be this rising trend of single women wearing fake engagement rings. And these aren’t women wearing fake engagement rings because they’re hoping and wishing for the real thing — they’re wearing fake engagement rings as a guy-repellent to keep creeps from hitting on them at work, corporate events, etc.
I first read about this trend in the October issue of Marie Claire, which had an article called “Faking My Engagement.” Journalist Claire Trageser was fed up with men hitting on her at work. So she bought a fake engagement ring from Ms. Taken, a site that sells fake rings to single women. After buying the ring, Claire explained how it took less than 30 seconds for men to notice the engagement ring and then quickly retreat.
Today I stumbled on this blog post written by a woman who works as a receptionist and is tired of her co-workers asking her out on dates. She’s contemplating buying a fake engagement ring, too, and is currently looking for places to buy a cheap engagement ring that won’t turn her finger green…
If all these single women are wearing engagement rings (either because they want to attract the real thing or use it to repel the creepos), could it possibly distort the meaning of an engagement ring in the first place? What do you think of this trend?
