A Proposal Without an Engagement Ring

How they met
Chimera and Wayne met while in Cancun,Mexico for spring break in 2001. While Chimera was waiting to appear
on MTV’s The Grind, a guy approached her and asked if he could sit down next to her. “It’s a free country,” she said, shrugging her shoulders and showing no interest in him. Wayne sat down and asked how Chimera was doing.

She started complaining that she was tired of waiting for the show to start taping. She was hot and thirsty and thought she might pass out, but she didn’t have money to buy a bottle of water. After listening to her complaints, Wayne walked away. Chimera figured she’d scared him off with her complaining. Another guy eventually sat down next to her, but, a little later, Wayne reappeared. He jokingly protested that she’d
let someone else take his seat. Chimera told him (with a touch of attitude) that she didn’t know he was coming back. He smiled at her, with the same smile that still melts her heart, and told her he was only joking, as he handed her a bottle of water. Chimera returned the smile, knowing right away that he was someone special.

After leaving Mexico, they didn’t see each other again until October 2006 because Chimera lived in New Jersey and Wayne lived in Ohio. Even though their schedules and, at times, significant others, made it difficult for the two of them to arrange a visit, they kept in touch by phone. Chimera finally flew out to Ohio and, that was the day of their first date.

The Proposal
After dating for about four months, Wayne and Chimera became happily engaged when he asked her to marry him one evening while they were talking on the phone. It was not your typical “proposal.” But this was also not a typical relationship. They were in a long-distance relationship and spent so much time on the phone that, in a way, it seemed fitting that they got engaged over the phone.

The proposal happened when, during one of their conversations, they both realized that they were deeply in
love and wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. Wayne asked Chimera to marry him and he threw out a date for them to get married, Oct. 27, the anniversary of their first date. The wedding date fell through, but the engagement did not. The couple told their friends and family that they were engaged months before Wayne proposed with a ring.

A few months after his telephone proposal, Wayne proposed a second time, in the more traditional sense. He took Chimera by a waterfront one evening, and asked why she was so willing to get engaged to him without a ring. She told him that the answer was simple. To her, material things, like engagement rings, are not what’s important when it comes to marriage. What’s important is commitment, loyalty, honor, love and knowing that the other will stand by you through good and bad times. As long as she had that in him, she told him that she did not need a ring. He was quiet for a second. Then he reached into his pocket, pulled out a gorgeous engagement ring and said, “Well, in case the ring does matter, baby, will you marry me?” Of course, he already knew her answer was yes.

That’s an incredible story! You know it’s true love when the girl doesn’t need a ring to get engaged. Congratulations!
