Building a Relationships Around Pets

couples-and-petsEveryone knows the biggest wedding trend right now are pets. People are bringing Fido and Fluffy along not only to their wedding ceremonies, but also their honeymoons. Gone are the days when people left their pet tied up in the backyard. These days pets are a part of the family and, for some couples, an important symbol in the relationship.

Whether you’re someone moving in with a significant other with a pet, or you both decide to adopt a pet together, a relationship with a pet means a lot more than you would think. Of course, there are people who say couples with pets are “test driving” what their lives would be like with a child, but pets can also have such a driving impact on relationships that they can either make them or destroy them. We all know of that “romcom” cliche of a couple meeting at a park when their dog leashes get tangled up. For some couples this movie cliche is a reality; pets can bring couples together.

There’s also those relationships that collapse under the pressure of pets. For example, the conflict between cat people and dog people, or if someone had a misbehaving pet that was driving the other upset. And once the relationship is pushed to a cross road, what do you do? Is it the relationship or the pet? But is this healthy or destructive to let pets have so much importance in a relationship? If you bring your dog to a wedding, is it OK to admit you’re not only marrying your fiance but also his dog, too?
