Green with En…gagement!

It’s a predominant trend that today’s couples strive to put a signature stamp on their engagements and weddings to set themselves apart from their friends and family and to create personal significance. In doing so, many couples eschew traditional elements in order to create something unique and special. One such element being given a makeover is the traditional “diamond engagement ring” which is being viewed in a much more fashionable, contemporary and symbolic manner.

Color Gemstones and Celebrities

From princess Kate, to Jessica Simpson, over the past decade there has been great interest in the beauty of colored stones as the main gem for engagement rings. Emeralds are high on the popularity scale due to their gorgeous color and relative hardness.

One of the more current and publicized emerald engagement rings is the one given by Olivier Martinez to Halle Berry. The ring, full of meaning and significance was centered by an emerald and then carved with unique symbols that have special meaning to the couple. But Halle Berry wasn’t the leader of the emerald engagement trend. In 1953, debutant, fashion icon and soon-to-be first lady, Jacqueline Bouvier accepted a breathtaking emerald engagement ring from John F. Kennedy.

The Deep Meaning of the Emerald

“Throughout history, in every civilization, emeralds have been highly prized,” says bespoke jeweler Rayaz Takat. “As far back as 3000 BC, the pharaoh’s in Egypt were having emeralds mined. Emeralds are exceptional and exotic and were believed to signify new life, provide protection for the wearer and improve their clairvoyance and perception.” His company, TAKAT Inc., has been specializing in the rare, rich green gems for over 60 years. His one-of-a-kind and limited edition jewelry creations are a popular choice among many of today’s A-list celebrities and have earned the company numerous noteworthy customers, including some of Europe and Asia’s most important royal families.

Takat explained that an emerald engagement ring not only allows couples the ability to set themselves apart, but it often allows couples to satisfy two of the most important quests when it comes to finding the perfect ring – symbolic meaning and proportion.  Aside from being associated with the month of May, emerald is also known as the “gem of successful love” signifying unity, harmony, balance, contentment and unconditional love. It’s believed that giving an emerald gift creates a bridge between two people. This symbolism is very much aligned with the giving of an engagement ring and the hope for marriage that lasts a lifetime. Many women today also desire a more proportionate-sized engagement ring. An emerald center gem can often allow a couple to purchase a ring that is larger and more important looking than an all-diamond style.

Unique Rings for a Unique Love

Rayaz also points out engagement ring individuality as being highly important. “Each couple is unique and special. Therefore, at TAKAT we believe that an engagement ring, the ultimate symbol of that relationship should never be ‘cookie-cutter’. Every piece of jewelry that we create is crafted with painstaking attention to the smallest detail. Special finishing and details are added to the sides and the backs of our creations and each of our gems, including ones used on the sides and backs is often certified to ensure that we are providing a piece as unique and individual as the wearer and as rare as finding true love.”
