An engagement…bike?

September 1st, 2010 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Engagement Ring, Proposal How tos, Romance and Proposals

Most women dream of getting a sparkly engagement ring for their proposal, but what if you aren’t into jewelry and would rather have an alternative?

A blog post over at Bike Hacks, a blog devoted to everything bikes, posted an adorable proposal story. Bike enthusiast Darryl didn’t buy his fiance an engagement ring, instead he bought her an engagement bike.

He proposed to her with a jewelry box that had a drawing of a hand wearing a bike as a ring. Afterward they both went to the bike shop and picked up an engagement bike together. Pretty cute, huh?

If you wanted something other than an engagement ring, what kind of “engagement” gift would you ask for?

Proposal in a photo booth

August 24th, 2010 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Proposing, Real Couples

We love photo booth proposals! Yesterday Tres Sugar posted this one of artist Angela Kohler and her now fiance getting engaged inside a photo booth. The picture speaks for itself.

These proposals are an easy way to capture a one-of-a-kind moment and still surprise your soon-to-be-fiancee, too.

Derek surprised Melody when he lured her into a photo booth to take some cute shots together. Little did she know he actually took shots of himself holding a “Will you marry me?” sign beforehand and slipped it into the photos after they were printed.

And in the recent issue of Engagement 101, we featured this couple, Ian and Ashlyn, and their quirky photo booth proposal that took place inside the place where they first met.

Public proposals: The ongoing debate

August 4th, 2010 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Proposal How tos, Proposing

proposalLemondrop has a bone to pick with public proposals…again. Blogger Carrie Sloan uses examples of recent crash-and-burn public proposals to illustrate why public proposals are a bad idea. She uses the example of a recent proposal that took place over the radio. The hopeless romantic thought his girlfriend of three months would be thrilled when he called her at her office and proceeded to propose over the radio. Needless to say, but he was completely shot down. Sloan argues that public proposals are not only rude, but terribly unromantic.

But no matter whom you fall head over heels for, we guarantee she never wanted a proposal involving the Seafood Lover’s Special, your snot-nosed cousins, or some screwball morning DJ.

The topic of public proposals is something we have tackled in the past. The rule of thumb is to only propose in public if your girlfriend is the type of person who likes to be the center of attention or is one of those girlfriends that get jealous when she sees someone being proposed to on the Jumbotron.

The decision if whether or not a public proposal is right for you is dependent on her personality, whether you two have discussed marriage before, and if the two of you are already on the same page about your future together. Public proposals usually work best when the girlfriend is already semi-expecting it. What do you think of public proposals?

A fire house proposal

August 2nd, 2010 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Real Proposal Stories

Proposal 17How they met
Thirteen years ago Becca was driving by the fire station where Mark worked. Mark was in the parking lot doing annual training with his co-workers. Becca was lost and asked Mark, a stranger, directions. He gave them to her, and Becca sped off in a hurry because she was late for a job interview. At the time he wished she didn’t leave so fast, but he thought maybe he would run into her again someday. And sure enough, he did! Eleven years later he saw her again at a carnival, which was coincidentally only a few blocks from the fire station where they first met. Surprisingly, Becca remembered him, and together they rode rides and laughed the whole night. They have been together ever since.

The Proposal
One day Mark told Becca he had to do annual training at the fire station and needed to hold a public service event to get “points.” Each person counted as a point. So to help him out Becca brought lots of her friends and family together for the “training,” but what she didn’t know was that all her friends and family were in on it, too.

Proposal 27

Mark proposed to Becca on May 8th at the Ofallon fire station. All of their friends and family were present, including a big fire truck, the chief of the fire department, and three of the department firefighters. Want to see how the whole proposal went down? Watch the video of the proposal below!

Think your wedding ring is one-of-a-kind? Think again! Check out this really cool wedding ring that has a projector built right into the band.

Best husband in the world Luke Jerram teamed up with a local jewelry store to build the unique ring, according to Gizmodo.  The wedding has tiny photographic slides and an adjacent lens. When light is shone directly on the  slide  it projects a photo of the happy couple, just like a real projector. Really unique, huh? Definitely a one-of-a-kind gem.

A proposal in Sicily

July 12th, 2010 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Real Proposal Stories

tom-marcella-1How did you meet?
Marcella and Tom met via a Yahoo! personal ad back in 1998.

How it all began
In late 1999 Marcella and Tom planned a trip to Sicily so that Tom could meet Marcella’s family. Tom is also half-Sicilian, and while he did not know any cousins in Sicily, he was very excited to see the country that his
family came from.

He remembered very vividly driving home from her house on his birthday (January 4th) and suddenly a great idea came into his mind — he would ask Marcella to marry him in the piazza of the town that his family was from. He figured his great-grandparents might have made their decision to move to America in the same spot, so it would be fitting that he would make it the place to ask Marcella to marry him.

Picking out the engagement ring

By April he had bought an engagement ring. Both Tom and Marcella had casually looked to figure out what style she liked. It turns out that Marcella’s best friend’s brother-in-law was a diamond broker, so Tom called him up, went over to his house and the diamond broker helped Tom pick out a stone. For the ring itself, Tom had a platinum ring custom-made by a friend’s father’s jewelry store in Philadelphia. It was based on a design that he and Marcella had seen in their travels.

The completed ring was in Tom’s hands by mid-April, and he hid it in his room for the next two months.

The Proposal

While in Sicily, Tom had several close calls to the perfect proposal, but he kept running into minor bumps along the way. During the entire trip he kept the ring box in his pocket, waiting for the perfect moment. One afternoon, as Tom and Marcella was walking through the piazza, he suddenly knew that he found the right place. It was dusk, the piazza was not all that crowded, and the scene was beautiful. To his left was the ancient Greek theater, to his right was a smoking Mount Etna, and in front of him were sheer cliffs overlooking the ocean below.

The scene took their breaths away, and Marcella said, “I don’t know how this could be more perfect.” Amid his nerves, Tom blurted out, “The only thing that would make this more perfect would be if you married me.” He then opened the ring box he had in his pocket.

She looked at the ring, then at Tom and then burst into tears as he put the ring on her finger. Tom said, “Well?” Marcella said, “You have to get on your knee.” Tom quickly handed his camera to the stranger standing next to him and got on one knee and asked her again.

She said yes! The couple went back to that same spot in Taormina three times over the last decade, and this year the couple went back for the anniversary of their engagement on June 23. In September 2010 the couple will celebrate their 9 year wedding anniversary.

Marriage proposal at “Eclipse” showing

July 8th, 2010 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Proposing, Real Couples, Romance and Proposals

The new Twilight: Eclipse film is turning out to be the go-to place for surprise marriage proposals. There has been several accounts of guys popping the question during midnight screenings across the country. Here’s a video of a marriage proposal that took place at an Eclipse screening.

In the video, the groom-to-be (one of the few men in the entire theater) nervously announces the real reason why he’s there. He then calls his girlfriend down who walks out in front of a “awww”ing crowd. Needless to say, he then gets on one knee and proposes as the crowd cheers. A pretty cute proposal! Watch it below:

Proposal at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway

June 28th, 2010 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Real Proposal Stories

austin-sheri-proposal

How they met

Sheri and Austin met through a mutual friend that Austin went to college with. He asked her out, they went on a date and they haven’t looked back since!
The Proposal

Back in May, Austin noticed a customer of his was tweeting about some contests regarding the Indy 500, and it got him thinking about ways he could propose to Sheri. Sheri is a huge race car fan, loves cars and they both have gone to the Indy 500 and the Brickyard 400 together the past couple of years. Austin wanted to come up with a unique way to propose to her that incorporated some of her favorite things.

He contacted the Director of Digital Communications at Hare Chevrolet and asked if he could get involved in one of their events so that he could propose to his girlfriend. Keep in mind, Austin had never spoken to him and emailed him out of the blue. The director responded in minutes and was immediately on board. Receiving the go ahead from the owners, he secured an invite for their Corvette owners-only event where Austin and Sheri got to go by police escort to the track. He also gave Austin a Corvette to drive for the weekend and helped get permission for Austin to propose on the bricks at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Austin had to contact both General Motors, who was sponsoring the event, and IMS officials in order to get clearance to get out of the car and step onto the track.

Of course, Austin had to have a cover story for all of this, so he called Sheri one day at work and told her a client of his at Formstack gave his boss tickets to a Corvette event, but his boss couldn’t make it. He also wrote an email explaining the event and had his boss send it to him so it would look like it came from his boss. It mentioned that Austin would need to take the Flip camera to record some video so he could write a customer spotlight post for their blog and put up a video of it. But really it was just an excuse for Austin to record everything without it being suspicious.

austin-sheri-proposal-2

Throughout the whole planning process, Austin really came to appreciate the tight-knit community Indianapolis has. He sent a few emails to complete strangers hoping for a response, and within hours he was connected to executives at the IMS, Chevrolet, Andretti Green Racing and even Sheri’s favorite driver Tony Kanaan. It was amazing how excited everyone was to help out and go out of their way for someone they had never met.

Interested in seeing how the proposal went? Watch the video to find out. Spoiler alert – she said yes!
