Long-term engagements?

May 3rd, 2010 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Hot Topic

engaged-couple-walking

In this blog post from last week we discussed whether it was a good idea to get engaged long-term even if you weren’t 100 percent sure about marriage. Although we think an engagement is questionable if both parties are still unsure about marriage, we want to know what you think. Is it OK to have a long-term engagement with no intentions of marriage?

Engaged but unsure of marriage

April 29th, 2010 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Engagement, Relationships

kelly-osbourne-dancing-with-starsDancing with the Stars contestant and rock offspring Kelly Osbourne is happily engaged to boyfriend Luke Worrell. But if you’re expecting wedding bells soon, you’re out of luck. Kelly told Barbara Walters on Here’s Barbara that she has “no intentions of getting married anytime soon.”

“I don’t want to be married until I’m 30,” she explained.

Which leads me to ponder…why do couples get engaged if they have no intention of marriage or are not 100 percent sure that they want to get married in the first place?

Kelly explained: “I said yes just to say yes, and that’s the truth..to tell him no I felt would ruin our relationship…then after the first year, I started to realize… maybe I really do want to marry.”

Although every relationship is different, saying yes and then hoping things will fall into place later down the line isn’t a healthy approach to the situation. An engagement should be discussed beforehand and taken seriously. Of course, I’m sure most people will disagree. I just believe that couples should know where the relationship is going before accepting an engagement. Do you agree or disagree?

Should you sign a pre-nup?

April 19th, 2010 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Hot Topic

We get it. Prenuptial agreement is an unromantic word. No one wants to really discuss it, but financially it’s sometimes the smartest thing a couple can do.

Talk show host Larry King recently split from his seventh wife, and the media is already chatizing him for failing to sign a prenup…again. But perhaps he’s just a romantic. A guy who’s certain that this time things will work out. How is he supposed to know that the relationship would fail?

Couples in the early part of relationships often go through a “honeymoon” or “infatuation” stage. So, needless to say, but these couples are not thinking about ending any time soon. They want to be together forever.

So on one side we have emotion and on the other we have logic. Logically it makes sense to sign a pre-nup, but emotionally a lot of couples don’t want to go through it.

So what do you think? Would you sign a prenuptial agreement?

Would you marry a bisexual?

April 5th, 2010 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Hot Topic

anna-paquin

True Blood star Anna Paquin, who’s engaged to marry her co-star Stephen Moyer, recently came out as bisexual.

There’s been a lot of debate over Paquin’s classification. Some question her bisexuality citing that as soon as you marry someone of the opposite sex, it classifies you as straight.

But others argue that people don’t have to force themselves into boxes, and that it’s perfectly OK to play for both sides of the team.

But when it comes to marriage do the rules change? If you knew your partner had sexual preferences different from yours, could it be something you could look past?

The dating prenup: Do you need one?

These days with more and more couples living together long-term, the dating prenuptial agreement has grown in staggering popularity.

After all, most long-term couples who live together treat their relationship the same way a married couple would. They have children together, they share finances together, and so if the relationship ever came to an untimely end, they would want to protect their assets the same way a married couple would.

The dating prenuptial agreement, or a “pre-prenup,” are quick and easy to draft and are perfect for cohabitating couples who are worrying about battling over ownership of the apartment, the pets or the couch. The New York Post even gave some pointers about how to draft a dating prenup by advising couples to “discuss the idea” of the prenup, “consult a lawyer,” and “put it in writing.”

But isn’t all this talk of prenups and pre-prenups kind of…unromantic? If  a couple feels they need a dating prenup before moving in together, does this mean they subconsciously already know the relationship won’t work out? Or perhaps these pre-prenup couples are just smart and realistically living in the real world.

Psychologist Dr. Joseph Cilona told The New York Post that signing a dating prenup can reveal a lot about a partner’s trust issues. “They can help identify and reveal potentially big disparities early on, before each person is invested very deeply emotionally,” he said.

But is the popular trend a smart reflection of modern relationships, or is it just kind of sad? With Hollwood power couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie recently consulting a divorce lawyer to draft their own dating prenup, we can vouch that this trend might just stick around for awhile.

What are your thoughts on dating prenups?

Study proves cohabitation does not lead to higher divorce rates

March 3rd, 2010 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Relationships

cohabitationThere has always been a constant debate over whether it’s good to live together before marriage or if it’s bad for the relationship.

Previous studies reported that couples who live together before marriage have a higher divorce rate — an astonishing statistic considering about 60% of couples today live together before marriage.

But according to an article in USA Today, a new federal study says there’s little difference between couples who live together before marriage and couples who live together after marriage.

Converting to a different religion for marriage

February 19th, 2010 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Hot Topic

converting-religion-marriage

It happens all the time. You fall in love with someone of a different religion, you’re both in love, but one person doesn’t want to walk down the aisle unless the other converts.

Usually this kind of ultimatum might end the relationship, but other times love prevails and the person converts for their partner. This is a lot easier if the person previously had no relgious affilation. It’s much easier for them to convert because there’s no religion for them to “betray.”

But then again, there are also several cases of people dropping a religion they followed since birth to convert to a new religion for marriage.

Some celebrity examples are Madonna and Guy Richie, Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen, and Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.

This was a pretty controversial topic over at the blog. What do you guys think? Would you convert to a different religion for marriage?
