The Art of Sizing your Ring

Let me guess. You love your ring so much, you never want it to leave your hand. I get it. You want to super glue that sucker on so you never have to worry about whether or not your future husband was smart enough to insure the sparkly thing. Naturally, you may opt for a ring that fits snug as a bug in a rug. WRONG. Don’t do it, ladies. Resist the urge to make your ring your second skin. Know what will happen in the months and years that follow your proposal and receiving your prized ring? Life.

When it gets hot, your fingers will swell. Gain a few pounds, your fingers will plump. Get pregnant and… well you get the picture. But if you think sizing up is your next best option, you’d be wrong again. Especially since in the winter your fingers will shrink and that sucker will slide right off into some nasty sewer where not even the Ninja Turtles will be able to find it for you. But don’t worry. You’re not doomed to a life of ill-fitting rings. Just follow these simple tips, and you’ll be able to wear your ring for the rest of your life without giving it a second thought.

1 –  Know How to Size Your Ring Properly

Go into any jeweler and they’ll be able to show you how it’s done, but if you’re using one of those printable paper, loop things you downloaded off the Internet, make sure you pay extra attention. The trick is to have a ring that goes on easily, but pauses when you pull back at the knuckle. Don’t strain yourself. Don’t twist the band and grunt like a monkey. Just give it a little tug, and it’ll come right off. Anything tighter than that is not a good idea for future you. Anything looser than that, and you’re in for a life full of metal detectors always within arm’s reach.

2 – Be Careful About the Ring’s Material

While titanium or tungsten engagement rings or wedding bands can seem pretty and alluring with their indestructible quality, you’ll want to avoid it at all costs. These materials cannot be resized ever, and if for some reason you swell up like a balloon, you may have to have it cut off of you. But gold and platinum? Those metals are great for resizing and even able to be soldered together.

3 – Don’t Go Too Long Without Taking it Off

We’ve already discussed when it’s okay to take your ring off in a previous post, so hopefully you’re exercising this practice regularly. But think of it this way: If you keep your ring on during a long period of time where you gain weight or swell (ie. Pregnancy or month long salty food bender), your ring will be stuck. This is a painful thing to endure and even the squeakiest of soaps can fail you. Worst case scenario, some scary professional with a mega blade will have to save you. Avoid the traumatic experience, destroyed ring and future therapy bills by just periodically taking off your ring so your finger doesn’t get stuck beyond repair.
