Getting Engaged Again? What Can You Learn From A First Marriage?

When fashion designer Kimora Lee Simmons and hubby Russell Simmons split after 11 years of marriage, the media world was caught off guard. The couple seemed to be perfectly suited with goofy personalities, along with a crazy wardrobe to match. But after citing irreconcilable differences (and we imagine too much distance with equally busy schedules), Simmons called it quits.

Now, Kimora’s ex has confirmed (via Twitter, nonetheless) that Kimora has been married to banker Tim Leissner for at least a while now.

But what can we learn from a second marriage? If you’re in Kimora’s shoes, here’s our advice:

Take it slow

Even if you didn’t rush into marriage the first go ‘round, be cautious when getting into a new relationship and especially a new marriage. Once you’ve tied the knot once, you’re more likely to tie it again, especially if you meet someone you’re very compatible with. If there are children involved, keep their interest in mind before moving into a new courtship.

Take some time alone

If the rumors are correct, Katy was really only single for a few months before getting together with John Mayer. Though it might work for some couples, it’s important to really take some time to yourself to reconnect, recover and reevaluate what you want out of a relationship. If you’re always paired with someone, how can you get to know yourself?

Be honest

Though it might not be the easiest topic for you to discuss, be open with your new partner about your past. Talking through the reasons your marriage didn’t work will help you avoid mistakes and trouble in the future. Also, your partner will be more comfortable knowing that everything is out on the table.
