5 Relationship Resolutions You Need to Make Right Now

Welcome to 2014! You kicked off this bright New Year with your favorite leading man, sealing a new beginning with a kiss. While the freshness of the year is encouraging you to be nicer and kinder to your guy, the newness inevitably will run dry before long. To keep your relationship stronger and more loving, make these resolutions right this second:

1 – Treat Him Like a Friend

Say your very best friend in the world came over and accidentally left one of her socks on your couch. Would you blow up at her? Yell and scream and call her immature, incompetent? Probably not. Before you pick a fight with your man over small things, think about how you would respond in the same situation with your best girlfriend. Odds are, you’d be more understanding and kinder.

2 – Have More Sex

In long-term relationships and in marriages, it can be easy to let that flame dwindle over the years. Keep it alive by encouraging more touching, cuddling, kissing and yes, sex! You should never force yourself to do something you don’t want to do, but everyone could use some more connection and making a commitment to more physical attention will do you both good in the new year.

3 – Make a Weekly Date Night

And no, we don’t mean when you order in Chinese and watch Law & Order re-runs for five hours after a long work day. Go on an actual date like you did when you first met: go to a movie, walk around the park, make a dinner reservation, take a spontaneous stay-cation. If you act like you did before you were overcome with relationship responsibilities, you might just fall back in love all over again.

4  – Ask Him Questions

Sure, you probably don’t actually care about the stats of his football team. Or the drama in his office cube over that thing that he talked about a week ago. But if you ask him questions and engage yourself in his life, you will begin to discover more about him. In return, he’ll feel loved and cared for.

5 – Laugh it Out

Living together can be tough or if you’re not living together, seeing each other constantly can also be annoying at times. Instead of nit-picking all of the things that are wrong (or nagging him about why he hasn’t proposed yet), count your blessings that you found someone so wonderful. Come up with reasons to joke and be playful with your man. Laughing will ultimately bring you closer and cut that silly tension you’ve built up. (Sex helps too!)
