A Loving Rain in Seattle Surprise Proposal

How They Met

We met one rainy September night at a Seattle Bar on the corner of Pike.

The Proposal

March 28th was the 34th wedding anniversary of my parents. In my eyes, they are the perfect example of true love. I know that proposing on that day to my true love was only fitting and a testament to the love that my parents have shown Smita and myself. I picked Pike Place Market as my location because I wanted a place that we would never forget. Anytime we would walk or drive by this location, we would remember that wonderful night. Plus, it is one of Seattle’s most iconic attractions.

I planned for months, conspiring with some of our closet friends and family to help. I wanted it to be a proposal that Smita would remember forever. I even went as far to have her drop me off at the ferry to spend the evening with my parents for their anniversary, but I never really got on that ferry. As she headed back home, I got into a taxi and met everyone at the corner of Pike and 1st. We gathered in front of the Farmers Market sign. The first 30 minutes of coordinating with food delivery trucks and valet parking was a group effort. Once traffic cleared, everyone took their place with letters and umbrellas in hand.

I’ve always said that I love her like Seattle loves rain so having umbrellas was necessary. Hiding behind my question mark umbrella, I peered out to see what seemed like hundreds of strangers gathering around. Smita was down the street with her best friend having a celebratory drink. Her friend was “supposedly” receiving an award for work at a local restaurant within the market. After getting everyone completely in place, I sent the text to her best friend to head towards us. With the help of my coworker who was standing on the corner looking for Smita, she blew a whistle to let us know that it was time to raise our umbrellas and reveal ourselves. I held out on raising my umbrella for a few seconds so that she could read the “Marry Me” sign and see our friends. I finally came out from behind my question mark umbrella, got down on one knee and popped the question. Her response with happy tears flowing down her face, “Yes, absolutely”!

The Engagement Ring

It’s a Halo diamond engagement ring with round pave-set diamonds in 18k white gold, by Blue Nile. We picked it together.
