And It’s a Wrap:

With the Emmy’s competed, the red carpet rolled up and the parties still lingering in peoples minds (and in some people headaches), the day after any awards show is spent collecting everything that was loaned to celebrities for the event. Of course, this isn’t always a smooth process either.

Julie Benz didn’t realize that the pieces were due back today and is filming in the valley so her stylist doesn’t have access to her home. A couple of younger celebrities stayed out way too late last night and are just getting up now at 11am. Therefore, they are going to be late returning items. So as I sit, waiting for pieces to come back, biting my nails and making reminder calls it gives me to time to review the styles we saw on yesterdays red carpet and critique what was hot and, of course, what was not.

Style trends start on the red carpet and with fall weddings and holiday parties coming up the red carpet is a great way to start planning looks over the next few months. So what did I see on the red carpet and what trends will you start to see over the next number of months?

Blue is big! Blue gowns were huge this year and gave a welcome contrast to the red carpet this year. From January Jones in a striking Amapo Blue Versace dress to Lea Michele in navy blue Oscar de la Renta. I saw various shades of blue everywhere this year. And as every bride knows something blue is always welcome at a wedding. Get prepared to see more of it on the red carpet and in the bridal aisle. Purple was the next big color contender with Jane Lynch and Emily Deschanel in deep gemstone amethyst gowns.

Grecian Goddess Galore! From a style perspective, the Grecian influence was strong in gowns. Kim Kardashian’s white gown by Marchesa was the most strongly indicative of this trend followed by Rose Byrne, in Gucci, and Sarah Hyland. However, several other gowns showed a heavy Grecian influence with one shoulder styling, simple lines and voluminous draping. Sofia Vergera was a ray of sunshine in her yellow beaded Carolina Herrera.

Updo Elegance!

Almost as a nod to the bride, several actresses showed off elegant wedding-worthy updos, especially newer brides Anna Paquin and Emily Blunt, Heidi Klum, Kim Kardashian and several others also wore sophisticated updos that showed off the face and neckline beautifully. The next most popular style was loose and wavy longer locks worn my actresses such as Claire Danes, Jayma Mays, Julie Bowen and Lea Michele.

Eye Emphasis!

Although the makeup trend was overall minimal on the red carpet, there was plenty of attention paid to the eyes. Elongated eye treatment with a hint of smoky created alluring looks for actresses like Tina Fey, Christina Hendricks and Rose Byrne. Lipstick shades tended toward the nude and pink tones, giving a fresh and youthful feel.

Juicy Gems!

From a style perspective jewelry is getting larger in size, from earrings to necklaces to bracelets. Additionally with all the color in the gowns, actresses took a strong liking to the wide variety of colors in the gemstone world. Robust and rich red rubies hung from Eva Longoria’s lovely ears, while chrysophase framed Julia Louis Dreyfus face. Some of my favorite earrings however, were the large rubelite and rock crystal earrings by Syna worn by Kaycee Stroh from High School Musical (of course I’m biased since I styled her with them). They would have also looked great on Kyra Sedgwick who wore a large rubellite ring.

Large bib style necklaces are making their way back to the red carpet. We’ve seen that trend strengthen over the past few seasons. Seen on Heidi Klum and Lea Michele, among others, they make the perfect compliment to the simple Grecian style gowns.  Of course classics will never go out of style and we styled many actresses, like Phyllis Smith from The Office with elegant diamond drops and platinum and diamond bracelets from designers like Jeffrey Daniels for Gem Platinum.

There’s a knock on the door. It’s Toni Collette’s stylist returning earrings and a bracelet by Etienne Perret. I mark them returned and thank her. There are only twelve more pieces to go before everything is back safe and sound and I can rest easy. I go back to making my calls.  “No, I can’t meet you at the corner of Beverly and Brighton to pick up the $100,000.00 bracelet”, I explain politely.
