Broken Engagement: Lost the guy, but keep the ring?

bachelor-melissa-engagement-ringWhen Bachelor Jason Mesnick broke up with Melissa Rycroft on national television, she politely gave the engagement ring back, but should she have? Author Christine Gallagher (The Woman’s Book of Revenge: Tips on Getting Even When ‘Mr. Right’ Turns Out to Be All Wrong) says Melissa has every right to keep the ring, reports E! Online.

“She should demand that ring, demand the show give her the ring,” Gallagher says. “She should make big deal out of it. That ring is worth a ton of money and it could be a nice little cash prize for her. I know that would make me feel better.”

Is it right to keep the ring after a canceled engagement? What do you guys think?

I broke off my engagement with my fiance almost 2 years ago. Even though I felt that he wasn’t treating me right and that his love wasn’t true I would have never imagined keeping the ring. Of course, I was the one who ended it. I just never thought that it was right to keep something like that…for money or memories.

I’ve read about the etiquette of breaking off an engagement. And it boils down to who breaks it off and why. In this case she had every right to keep the ring. Had it been her breaking it off, it would be expected for her to return the ring.

But Melissa seems to be America’s Sweetheart and perhaps she didn’t want anything from him, regardless of what the worth.

Hi this is a really useful blog. I’ll be back soon to read some more.

I think it’s ok to keep the ring if you mutually agree to.. In her case, she should b/c he didn’t even pay for it, it was paid for by the show!

  5. Aja says:

Depending on which state you live in it doesn’t matter who breaks it off the ring has to be given back.. the states that enforce this are Pennsylvania, wisconsin, iowa, kansas, new jersey, new york.

Even in states that require the ring to be givin back, theres always a loop hole. If the guy proposes and it does not result in marriage then the ring is to be given back. If it is given to a girl on a holiday such as christmas, mothers day, new yrs or a birthday then it is legally considered a gift and does not have to be returned. In my own moral opinion. If the guy breaks it off the girl has the right to keep the ring. iF she breaks it off then she should return it. In my case I offered the ring back to my ex fiance when he broke up with me but he insisted on me keeping it. Its still locked away in a box in my closet.

She should. Big money for the ring or not! Whole show is about presentation, not about love; Has any of The Bachelor show final couples got married, live happily ever after? Girls want time on national TV, the guy has better chance finding wife in personal, less dramatic dates. So girls, can’t have both ways.

  8. Stacy says:

It does not matter who breaks the engagement. Unless it is a family heirloom on the brides side, she offers to return the ring. The groom can then say, “no, please keep it.” Why would anyone want to keep an expensive piece of jewelry with so much significance behind it just to lock it away in a drawer? Besides, if he breaks the engagement and she refuses to return the ring, there will be no chance for reconciliation. It only makes the jilted bride look petty and vindictive.
Krystal-thanks for your opinion on the holiday proposal. I’m going to go ask my ex-fiance for a replacement Christmas gift!
