When we started Engagement 101, it was right at the beginning of big changes in engagement ring design. The classic Tiffany solitaire was starting to get competition from halo styles and more intricate settings. Today the possibilities are endless, with many talented designers exploring alternative designs and couples venturing in designing and customizing their engagement ring. We asked some of our favorite designers their feed-back on these changes and how their collection is different from 10 years ago.

We asked Myriam from Gumuchian what the major difference was between engagement rings then and the bridal jewelry trends of today.

“Certainly the big difference between 2006 and 2016 is that more brides want their ring set in either yellow gold or rose gold instead of all platinum as it was mostly in 2006.

Our top selling engagement ring in 2006 was our Twinset collection which was launched that year and is still popular after 10 years. Each feature diamond is prong set and within each prong is a bezel set diamond. The concept behind this design technique is to create a diamond intense look where your eye is not distracted by metal, just by sparkle.

Today, engagement rings tends to be more colorful, with more vintage inspired details. Halo engagement rings are one of the trendiest of all.

We have had great success with our single halo Carousel engagement ring, in all three metals. The center diamond is prong set, with the accent diamonds bead-set in a single halo around the feature diamond. To create an alternative look than most halo styles we incorporated four slightly larger accent diamonds that are bezel set into the halo.”
